A glimpse into the studio doors and it is clear that Activate House hosts a diverse community. Classes are filled with people of varying abilities, genders, ages, races, and sexualities. All backgrounds are continuously welcomed and celebrated through efforts such as inspired music themes and fundraiser events. Beyond creating a community of diverse individuals, A.H. also strives to promote accessibility by ensuring classes can be reached by individuals in need of support. To bring the power of mindful movement to individuals who otherwise would not have the means, A.H. offers a scholarship program to the House of Wellness. After being a part of the community for 2 months, a recent scholarship recipient answered some questions about their inspiring experience at Activate House.
01. How has Activate House helped your personal life?
A.H. came at a perfect time in my life. I started my journey here during the last few weeks of my college semester. I tend to forget myself during finals and let school consume my life, but A.H. pushed me to schedule time for myself. I am a senior in college and I have never felt calmer during finals. The people around me noticed it too and could not believe how easy going I was during finals week. Other than the peace of mind and clarity, this place also gave me a tremendous amount of confidence. I found a new love and acceptance for myself. I found that I will not be happy once I get to a specific goal, but I can be happy and confident with where I currently am. I learned that it’s not about how close I can get to someone else, but how far I can push myself. Always me vs. me; strive to be better than myself and myself only.
02. What were your goals while attending Activate House?
My goal with A.H. was to find a passion to be active again. I have been active on my own for the past couple of years and it started to feel more like a chore than a passion. On my first day at A.H., I quickly felt that passion and excitement again; it has been a month and I still feel excited to go every time. Other than the mental side of this, I also became stronger and built up my endurance. The environment is so motivating when you’re in the room with an amazing community, the loud music with the best playlists, and the rush of adrenaline. The 45 minutes fly by and you don’t realize what happened until the class is over. There’s no better feeling than being drenched in sweat, out of breath, and knowing you’re leaving a little bit stronger.
03. What have you learned while spending time at A.H.?
I have learned that I love to spend time with myself and I have learned to become independent. I tend to always have company and this is the first time I showed up to an unfamiliar place with nobody I knew. Everyone was welcoming, so I felt comfortable very quickly. I quickly started to look forward to my little “getaways” to A.H. It was a bit of a drive, but I grew to love the drive, the class, and the post-work-out coffee of course. I learned to love to spend time with myself and discovered how fueling it is. Getting comfortable with myself also benefited my relationships with friends and family because I am able to be more present with them after having clarity with myself.
04. What will you keep doing after A.H.?
After A.H., I will continue to allow myself to have “me time” and not get caught up with the stress of my responsibilities. I will do this by continuing my self-care dates because I found that it’s beneficial for my relationship with myself and others as well. I will keep attending classes at A.H. to improve my strength and endurance at my own pace. I am truly inspired by everyone at A.H. to become a better version of myself.
